Police Say 52 Held in Ekpoma Unrest Were Involved in Looting, Not Peaceful Protest
EKPOMA, Edo State — The Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has clarified that the 52 persons taken into custody during recent unrest in Ekpoma were arrested for alleged criminal acts — including looting and vandalism — and not for taking part in a lawful demonstration, security authorities said.
Speaking during a weekend broadcast of Crime Buster with Desmond, the police boss dismissed claims circulating online that officers had targeted peaceful protesters. He noted that it is common for violent actors to hijack public demonstrations and commit offences under the guise of protest, after which misinformation spreads, accusing security forces of wrongful arrests.
IGP Egbetokun explained that while the Nigeria Police supports the constitutional right to peaceful protest, it will not tolerate criminality carried out in the name of civic action. “If you want to come out for a peaceful protest, what’s our business? We will protect you,” he said, adding that the police continue to encourage lawful expression.
However, the IGP stressed that people who engage in violence, property destruction, or theft during public gatherings will be held accountable. According to reports from security sources in Ekpoma, the 52 suspects were arrested after alleged involvement in looting shops and vandalising property, including the palace of the Enogie of Ekpoma.
The arrests followed a protest in Ekpoma against a rise in insecurity cases, where students and youths had marched through the streets calling for action against criminal activities. The demonstration reportedly escalated into disorder, prompting police intervention and subsequent detentions.
As of this report, the suspects remain in custody as legal proceedings continue, while residents and stakeholders await further developments.
